With the global shift from fossil fuels to more sustainable renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro, Sokoto Investment Company through public-private partnership will encourage investment in the necessary infrastructure to remodel Sokoto state into Nigeria’s Silicon Valley of renewable energy. With the aim of making Sokoto state a top destination for private sector investment in renewable energy.
Sokoto State is endowed with abundant mineral resources such as Kaolin, Limestone, Gypsum, Phosphate rock, Gold, Potash, Clay, Copper, Iron ore and Coal. Investment opportunity exists in the exploration of these mineral resources.
Kaolin is an important and widely used industry material. Commercial deposit of kaolin exists in Illela local government of Sokoto state; other occurrences are reported in Tangaza, Bodinga, Yabo and Gada local government areas. Most kaolin deposits occur at relatively shallow depth from 2 to 5 meters below ground level.
Limestone is the mineral form of calcium carbonate; it occurs in the Kalambaina, Dange and Wurno formations. Limestone is the best-studied mineral in sokoto state. The Geological survey of Nigeria estimates a reserve of 100 million tons in Kalambaina Sokoto. Also a preliminary geological investigation carried out recently by Geochris Nigeria Ltd at Kware and Dange-shuni Local Governments estimated a combined reserve of 100million tons.
There are large deposits of Phosphate at the Dukamaje. The state government, RMRDC and Dangote group are currently working on the area of exploration of more deposits of Phosphate rock in the state.
Clay is an excellent material for production of refractory bricks and ceramic tiles. Substantial commercial deposits are available in Wurno, Dange and Goronyo local governments in Sokoto state. Investment opportunities exist in production of ceramic tiles, sanitary wares, bricks, roofs, sewer pipes and furnace linings.
Gypsum deposits are found in Dukamaje and Dange formations of the Sokoto basin with substantial deposits also found in Wurno, Gada, and Gwadabawa Local Governments. The main use of Gypsum is for cement production, other uses of Gypsum include the manufacturing of Plaster for Paris, classroom chalk, pharmaceuticals and industrial fillers and extenders.
